Walkergate, Alnwick, old school houses

St. Mary's Chantry, Walkergate circa 1488
The Chantry had a thatched roof and had stone stairs on the outside of the wall leading to the upper floor. There was a total of six rooms in this building.
One chaplain taught grammar to poor scholars in here.

The Duchess's School (for girls) Walkergate
In 1808 the Duchess of Northumberland opened a school for poor girls in this house. In 1820 the school moved to a large house in nearby Canongate.

Hello. Thank you so much for sharing the old pictures of Alnwick - lovely. My husband's family came from Alnwick in the early 1800s, and when I research any tree I love to find old pictures of where the family were living.
Again thanks, Jean.

Wonderful blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News. Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Many thanks.
