Hello. Thank you so much for sharing the old pictures of Alnwick - lovely. My husband's family came from Alnwick in the early 1800s, and when I research any tree I love to find old pictures of where the family were living.
Again thanks, Jean.

Wonderful blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News. Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Many thanks.

Downies Of Narrowgate...run by Colin & Donald (my Dad) until about 1972.It had been started as a Fish Shop in 1938 or 39 by their parents Matthew and Lottie. Colin & Donald took it over after they returned from the WWii, Donald started the Fruit shop in 1950 or 51. By the 1970's all the next generation had left Alnwick and weren't interested in running the business. Both Colin & Donald smoked and had health problems, Colin had a stroke in the late 60's and Donald had angina and chest problems so they retired, but kept the Fish & Chip shop for a few more years until my sister Sue married Rob Wiltshire and took it over. Glad to see a photo of the old place.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally the building 2 & 4 Narrowgate is actually one of the oldest buildings in Alnwick, it dates back as far as the late 1500's and was used as a Guest House for Alnwick Abbey. The arch between the two shops used to lead to some very poor tenements and flats which were still being lived in until the 1950's. Think it was Nun's Court or Nun's Close. There was quite a lot of very poor housing in courts and closes in Alnwick. By the mid 60's the arch had been incorporated into the shop.I remember selling christmas trees down the back in December.
